Create a Shiny Earth with Photoshop 3D layers
Photoshop CS4 Extended has been here for quite some time and we have obviously not noticed the 3D rendering tool it boasts,….. UNTIL NOW!
For some reason, the 3D applications of Photoshop aren’t often explored(this is because the “3D” part in Photoshop is intended to be used by movie and animation artists, but it’s amazing what you can do with them once you know how to dig in. Eren Goksel, (a premier graphic artist and a lecturer in Anadolu University) is going to show us how to exploit the 3D tool in Photoshop CS4.
In this tutorial I’ll show you how to create a shiny planet icon using the 3D features of Photoshop CS3 Extended or CS4 Extended. This will cover basic information about 3D layers and texture maps. Let’s get started!

This is what i tried and the result is indeed beautiful…
You can actually go beyond just a simple gradient background like the one above and add stars(using noise feature in PS) and also a lens flare to get a space scene. If you more give attention to detail and if you play with some lighting effects, you can actually do better than what i did here: Click on the image for a larger view.
